Summary

    Quick answer

For most international travelers, Ubigi is the better choice and a strong Nomad eSIM alternative.
It offers transparent data with no daily cap, premium Tier 1 network access through its NTT-backed owned infrastructure, an unlimited hotspot and one reusable eSIM, and on France, Japan and UK plans it is cheaper than Nomad.
Nomad suits short, light, budget trips, but its “unlimited” plans are limited to 2 GB per day at full speed, then 512 kbps.

    Introduction

Ubigi vs Nomad eSIM 2026: both offer international connectivity, but they are built very differently. Ubigi runs its own premium network through Transatel, an NTT company, with transparent data and one reusable eSIM. Nomad is a budget reseller whose “unlimited” plans come with a daily limit. This Ubigi vs Nomad comparison shows where that difference shows up in your daily experience: pricing, what “unlimited” really means, network quality, and the small details that make a trip smooth.

How we compared: prices were verified on each provider’s website on 9 June 2026, ratings are as of June 2026, and the fair use limits come from each provider’s published policy.

Ubigi or Nomad eSIM: The  30-Second Verdict

Choose Ubigi if: you want clear pricing, generous data with a clearly displayed fair use threshold and no daily cap, premium Tier 1 4G/5G access through Ubigi’s own MVNO network, an unlimited hotspot on every plan, one reusable eSIM across all your trips, and a home region IP that keeps your banking and streaming apps working. And finally, you can top up your Ubigi data anytime, even without Wi-Fi or credit, for truly worry-free travel. For most travelers, this is the better all-round choice.

Nomad still makes sense if you’re on a tight budget and open to making compromises. Just keep the trade-offs in mind. Its “unlimited” data plans are rationed at 2 GB/day, its network is resold rather than owned, and a new trip usually means installing a new eSIM.

The bottom line: Ubigi runs its own core network as a full MVNO, and belongs to the NTT group, the same group as NTT Docomo. That means Japan plans on Docomo and KDDI au, the two carriers with the widest nationwide reach, rather than a city-focused footprint. When your trip goes beyond Tokyo, that’s the difference you feel.

How Much Does an eSIM Actually Cost? France, Japan and the UK

Ubigi vs Nomad eSIM 2026 - How Much Does an eSIM Actually Cost? France, Japan and the UK

Nomad may be seen as the budget pick, but on the routes below Ubigi is actually cheaper, and it offers unlimited data where Nomad does not. Ubigi’s pricing is also straightforward: you see exactly what you pay and exactly what you get. All prices below are in USD, verified on 9 June 2026.

Best eSIM for France, 30 days

    Plan Ubigi Nomad eSIM
    10 GB $10 $14
    Unlimited $39 Not available

In France, Ubigi is cheaper on 10 GB and offers an unlimited plan that Nomad simply does not provide. For a data-heavy stay, Ubigi is the only one of the two that keeps you covered.

Best eSIM for Japan, 30 days

    Plan Ubigi Nomad eSIM
    10 GB $17 $22
Unlimited $65 (30 days) Not available in 30 days

Japan is where Ubigi’s pedigree shows. Ubigi’s parent company NTT operates NTT Docomo, one of Japan’s premium networks as well as KDDI, and Ubigi connects to the best signal directly, so you get a stable, high-speed connection in Tokyo and beyond rather than resold access that can slow down when the network is busy. Ubigi is also cheaper on 10 GB, and offers a full 30-day unlimited plan, where Nomad’s longest unlimited plan in Japan only runs for 21 days.

    Estimate Your Savings

    Your actual spend depends on:

    • Daily usage: video streaming uses roughly 1 to 3 GB/hour in HD, video calls around 500 MB/hour, navigation around 100 MB/day, browsing around 50 MB/day.
    • Trip length: the longer the trip, the more Ubigi’s reliable data coverage and reusable eSIM pay off.
    • Number of devices: share your Ubigi data with a travel companion or a second device through your phone hotspot, with no extra fees.
    • Usage profile: the heavier or more bursty your use, the more Nomad’s rigid 2 GB/day cap constrains you, while Ubigi lets you use your high-speed data without a daily ceiling.

A quick guide to choose your eSIM data plan

Short city break, light use (maps, messaging, a little browsing): a 10 GB plan is plenty.
Two weeks or more, daily streaming or video calls: go unlimited. Remember Ubigi has no daily cap, while Nomad limits you to 2 GB/day.
Traveling with a partner and sharing one connection: go unlimited, because a 2 GB daily cap is reached fast

Is Nomad eSIM’s “Unlimited” Really Unlimited?

“Unlimited” sounds simple. With most resellers, it is not.

    What Nomad eSIM Actually Delivers

Nomad eSIM unlimited plans carry a fair use policy: after about 2 GB of high-speed data per day, your speed is cut to 512 kbps for the rest of the day. At 512 kbps, streaming, video calls and heavy browsing become difficult. The allowance resets the next day, but the daily ceiling is the real limit behind the word “unlimited.”

To put 2 GB in perspective, that is roughly:

    • 1 to 2 hours of HD video streaming, and only about 20 minutes in 4K.
    • A couple of hours of video calls with family or colleagues.
    • Two to three hours of scrolling video-heavy social media such as TikTok or Instagram.

For a light day of maps and messaging, 2 GB is plenty. But on an active travel day, streaming on the train, video calling home and sharing a few clips, you can reach it before dinner, and then you are stuck at 512 kbps until the next day. Share your connection with a travel companion, and you get there twice as fast.

    Why Ubigi Is Different

Every operator uses a fair use policy, and Ubigi is transparent about its thresholds. On a 30-day unlimited plan you stay at full 4G/5G speed up to 60 GB (30 GB on 15-day plans, 25 GB on 7-day plans), with no daily cap. Once past the threshold, your connection is optimized to 2 Mbps, which still supports maps, messaging and browsing. Nomad’s monthly high-speed volume can be similar, but it is rationed at 2 GB per day and drops to 512 kbps once you cross it. The practical difference: Ubigi lets you use your high-speed data when you actually need it, including heavy days, and keeps you usable afterward at 2 Mbps rather than 512 kbps.

Which eSIM Delivers Better Connection Quality?

Ubigi vs Nomad eSIM 2026 - Which eSIM Delivers Better Connection Quality?

Coverage maps look similar, but quality is where Ubigi separates itself. Ubigi operates its own MVNO infrastructure through Transatel, a subsidiary of NTT, with direct partnerships negotiated with Tier 1 carriers (EE and H3G). Nomad resells access through aggregators, so it depends on whatever priority its partners allocate. That reseller model is visible in the small print: Nomad’s UK eSIM, for example, is supplied by a third-party provider (Green).

    • Network architecture: Ubigi operates as a full MVNO, running its own core network rather than reselling another provider’s wholesale package, and as a Transatel brand, it is wholly owned by NTT, the parent company of NTT Docomo.
    • Real-world speeds: independent testing in Japan reports Ubigi averaging around 158 Mbps, with instant page loads, smooth video streaming and lag-free video calls.
    • Coverage that holds up: Docomo plus KDDI au means the connection stays solid beyond the cities, rural Hokkaido, the Japanese Alps, the longer Shinkansen routes.

Lower Latency Thanks to a Worldwide Network

When you connect abroad, your data often has to travel all the way back to a gateway in your home country before reaching the internet, which adds delay. Ubigi operates its own core mobile network infrastructure and roaming platform, with P-Gateways across multiple continents. This allows data to be routed locally rather than through a distant central gateway, helping reduce latency and improve browsing, streaming, gaming, and app performance while traveling. An eSIM reseller does not control this layer, so its latency depends on how its partners route traffic.

    The Japan Example

In Japan, the network behind your eSIM is what decides where it actually works. Ubigi connects to NTT Docomo and KDDI au, the two carriers with the widest nationwide footprint. Nomad’s Japan plans run on KDDI au and SoftBank, without Docomo access. In Tokyo, Osaka or Kyoto, both perform well. Beyond the cities, rural Hokkaido, the Japanese Alps, the longer Shinkansen routes, Docomo coverage makes the difference. Ubigi also operates as a full MVNO, with its own core network and a direct relationship with NTT, Docomo’s parent company.

The Details That Make a Difference While Traveling

One eSIM for All Your Trips

With Ubigi, you install the eSIM once and it stays on your device. You buy new plans anytime in the app, with no reinstallation. With Nomad eSIM, a new plan after expiry usually means a new QR code, deleting the old profile and installing a new one. On some Nomad data plans there is no top-up option at all, so running low means buying a fresh eSIM.

Top Up Even Without Local Data

Installing your Ubigi eSIM requires Wi-Fi. After that, you simply top up directly from the app, even if you’ve run out of data, since Ubigi keeps the app accessible worldwide for top-ups via its own connectivity. No more hunting for unsecure public Wi-Fi to add data. Nomad eSIM generally needs an active internet connection to top up, exactly when you are least likely to have one.

    Activation on Arrival (Smart Start)

Your Ubigi eSIM data plan validity only starts when you reach your destination. You land, turn off airplane mode, and you are online.  With Nomad eSIM, the plan starts when you first connect to a supported network in your destination country, or automatically 60 days after purchase, even if you never used it.

    Know Before You Buy

A few details to check on Nomad eSIM plans, taken from its own product pages: some plans are non-refundable and the refund policy varies, coverage may exclude overseas territories, and, as noted, some plans cannot be topped up. Ubigi keeps a single clear set of terms across plans.

A Home Region IP (Smart IP)

With Ubigi, you can choose between using an IP address from your home country (available in selected countries), so your banking apps and streaming services keep working as they do at home, with no extra setup, or the available IP address in your destination. Ubigi can still provide a home-country IP, even when traffic is routed through a gateway in another country, ensuring low latency and a fast, responsive connection.

Smart IP is available when your home country is one of a list that currently includes France, the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, Germany, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, Belgium and Singapore. Ubigi is not a VPN, so if you specifically need to appear in another country, you can still add one on top.

What Travelers Say After Switching to Ubigi

What Travelers Say After Switching to Ubigi

Verified reviews from travelers who used both services.

“Best service. Easy eSIM setup, flexible plans, good call and internet quality, and the ability to use multiple plans at the same time depending on your current location. And most importantly, the service does not shortchange you on data. Nomad, which I used before, cut off my 3 GB plan after I had used 2.7 GB. I highly recommend this service if you need a travel eSIM.” Valenti, 5/5.

“Excellent eSIM for Samsung. Traveling through Spain, Portugal and Italy with a Samsung S24 FE, the Ubigi eSIM performed perfectly and installation was automatic. I switched from a Nomad eSIM that disconnected me daily and required Wi-Fi to recover. Ubigi saved my vacation from becoming a nightmare.” John, 5/5.

“Easy to use and it just works. I tried both Ubigi and Nomad on my recent trip to Oslo. The onboarding was far easier with Ubigi, and the network connection was very good, 4 to 5 bars most of the time, where Nomad had no service or a single bar. I will be using Ubigi again for future trips.” Jorge, 5/5.

    So, Ubigi or Nomad eSIM?

For most travelers, Ubigi is the stronger all-round choice. Nomad eSIM has its place for short, light, budget trips, as long as you accept its limits.

Ubigi Is the Better Choice If

    • You want generous high-speed data with a transparent threshold and no daily cap, instead of 2 GB/day.
    • You want premium Tier 1 network quality and priority during congestion.
    • You want an unlimited hotspot on every plan.
    • You want one reusable eSIM across all your trips, with no reinstallation and easy top up.
    • You work remotely and need low latency and reliable video calls.

Nomad eSIM May Suit You If

    • You travel for one to two weeks and use less than 10 GB.
    • You only need light use on your phone and budget is your one priority.
    • You do not mind a daily speed cap and a new eSIM for each new plan.

If you are only comparing the lowest upfront price, check the route first: on France, Japan and the UK, Ubigi is actually cheaper. On overall value, network quality and day-to-day reliability, Ubigi comes out ahead.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ubigi a good Nomad alternative?

Yes. Ubigi covers the same kind of trips as Nomad eSIM, but with an owned premium network, transparent fair use limits and, on France, Japan and UK plans, lower prices. It is a natural alternative if you found Nomad’s daily cap or reliability limiting.

Which is cheaper, Ubigi or Nomad eSIM?

It depends on the route, and on the destinations compared here Ubigi wins. In France, Ubigi’s 10 GB costs less than Nomad’s, and Ubigi offers an unlimited plan that Nomad does not. In Japan and the UK, Ubigi is cheaper too.

Does Nomad eSIM really offer unlimited data?

Not at full speed. Nomad’s unlimited plans cut your speed to 512 kbps after about 2 GB of high-speed data per day, until the next day. The volume is unlimited, but high-speed data is rationed daily. Ubigi’s unlimited keeps you at full speed up to a clearly displayed threshold (60 GB on a 30-day plan) with no daily cap, and even past it you stay at 2 Mbps rather than 512 kbps.

Which eSIM has better coverage and quality?

Both cover 200+ destinations, so the real difference is quality. Ubigi uses Tier 1 carrier partnerships through its own infrastructure, which means higher priority during congestion and lower latency thanks to its worldwide network. Nomad eSIM resells access, so its priority and routing depend on its partners.

Do I need a new eSIM for each trip?

Not with Ubigi. One reusable eSIM stays on your device and you buy new plans in the app. With Nomad eSIM, a new plan after expiry generally requires installing a new profile, and some plans cannot be topped up at all.

Which eSIM works better in Japan?

Ubigi has a natural edge in Japan: its parent company NTT operates NTT Docomo, a premium Japanese network, and Ubigi connects to it directly. Nomad eSIM resells access to the same networks, so performance can be more variable during peak hours.

Can two people share one plan?

An eSIM installs on one device at a time. With Ubigi you can share your data through your phone hotspot, which is practical thanks to its large and unlimited plans and unlimited tethering.

Does Ubigi give me a home IP?

Ubigi can provide an IP linked to your home country (Smart IP), so your banking apps and streaming services keep working as they do at home, even when your connection breaks out locally for lower latency. It is available for a list of home countries that includes France, the UK, the US, Japan, Germany, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, Belgium and Singapore. Ubigi is not a VPN, so if you specifically need to appear in another country, you can still add one on top.

What happens if I run out of data?

With Ubigi, once your eSIM is installed you can top up even without local data anytime anywhere with free app access for top ups. Nomad eSIM usually needs an active internet connection to add data, and some Nomad plans cannot be topped up at all.

Which eSIM has better customer support?

Ubigi offers 24/7 multilingual support through in-app chat and email. Nomad eSIM offers in-app chat and email support. For urgent issues abroad, round-the-clock support resolves problems faster.

Easy setup and reliable service in Japan
I used Ubigi eSIM during my trip to Japan and had a great experience. Setup was quick and straightforward, and the service worked as soon as I arrived. I had reliable data throughout my trip and didn’t run into any connection issues. It was really convenient not having to buy a physical SIM or worry about roaming charges. I would definitely use Ubigi again for international travel.

Good Cellular Data Experience While In Japan
I used Ubigi for cellular data while in Japan, it was the cheapest for the month I was in Japan while also covering South Korea which I had a brief stopover in. I had no issues activating it once I was in Japan (I am tech savvy though and used to managing esims). You can check how much more data you have in the app. I didn't get nagged or anything while I had the service; the only thing was a reminder when the expiry was getting close.
