The EID which stands for “Embedded Identity Document” is a serial number corresponding to the eSIM installed in a connected device (smartphone, tablet, laptop, etc.). This serial number is unique for each eSIM.

spotty reception for Ecuador
Ubigi had good guides on how to connect and installing the e-sim was seamless. However when we landed in Ecuador the e-sim took a while to register and start working. Outside of the main city our reception was very spotty. even in large towns on major highways there was very unreliable service.
In Quito the reception and connection was great,

We travelled extensively through many parts of Japan and never had at any time a problem with the internet connections, be it in Osaka, Kanazawa, Kurobe Gorge, Nagano, etc. etc. HOWEVER, if one is deep in an underground station there is no more reception and with these huge stations and masses of people rushing about orientation can be pretty frustrating.

Data was available at all time without failure! That made my trip very enjoyable. I was able to persuade my brother to use Ubigi and in return, he was able to "hook" another friend to Ubigi!

Reliable Sim in Japan
The registration, sign up was very easy and connected right away when we got to Japan. Connectivity was very good but one GB was too small for my one month trip. I use this only when I need and use hotel's wifi at night. But I forgot to turn off ubigi one day and used up one third of one GB. I wish Ubigi sells something between 1 GB and 10? GB. Then I don't have to top up half way. But it's been very good product. Thanks Ubigi!

Good connection for most uses
Good connection for most uses outside of the hotel and public wifi sites. The setup is a little murky, hence the loss of one star. Ubigi needs to provide more specific instructions for the latest IOS 26, including how to return to the original settings after returning from a trip. I was able to get the settings right and then restore them only after some trial and error.

How to check if a device is ready for eSIM?
Check eSIM compatibility
Smartphones & Cellular Tablets:
Dial (*#06#). If an EID number shows, your device supports eSIM!
Laptops (Windows 10/11):
Open your flyout (bottom-right corner). If Cellular settings are visible, your laptop supports eSIM!
Check Carrier Unlock
On iOS:
Go to Settings > General > About, scroll to Carrier Lock. If it says "No SIM restrictions", your device is unlocked!
On Android:
Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Network, turn off Auto network selection. If you see multiple available networks, your device is unlocked! If only one appears, or you get an error, it may be locked.
You already have an eSIM in your cart.
Each order can only include one eSIM data plan.
Current plan: •
If you choose to add a new one, the current plan will be removed. What would you like to do?
