Huawei P40 and P40 Pro are the first smartphones from Huawei to be equipped with an eSIM. However, the Huawei P40 Pro+ doesn’t support eSIM.
The Huawei P40 and P40 Pro come with a single SIM (SIM + eSIM) and with dual SIM (Nano SIM 1 + NM Card or Nano SIM 2 + eSIM). – If your phone is a single-SIM device, there are still two options displayed on the screen: SIM 1 and SIM 2. The eSIM card is installed in the SIM 2 slot by default. – If your phone is a dual-SIM device and a physical SIM card is already inserted in slot 2, SIM 2 will be disabled when you add an eSIM card. Inserting or removing SIM 2 will not affect the eSIM services.
To activate your eSIM, you need a wireless service carrier which provides you an eSIM profile as well as data plans. eSIM data plans availability may vary depending on country and carrier. Purchasing the data plan was easy. Topping up also appears to be easy. Although we didn't quite connect automatically like we thought when we got into Japan airspace, we figured it out pretty quick. We've been VERY happy with the coverage and speed of this service. We plan to continue using Ugibi for all of our international trips. It is very affordable, easy to use, and works seamlessly with our phones.

How to check if a device is ready for eSIM?
Check eSIM compatibility
Smartphones & Cellular Tablets:
Dial (*#06#). If an EID number shows, your device supports eSIM!
Laptops (Windows 10/11):
Open your flyout (bottom-right corner). If Cellular settings are visible, your laptop supports eSIM!
Check Carrier Unlock
On iOS:
Go to Settings > General > About, scroll to Carrier Lock. If it says "No SIM restrictions", your device is unlocked!
On Android:
Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Network, turn off Auto network selection. If you see multiple available networks, your device is unlocked! If only one appears, or you get an error, it may be locked.
